How to Fix Broken Highlighter

Are you one of the many that have dropped your highlighter and picked it up just to find that the smooth palette is now cracked in pieces? Searching for ways to fix your broken highlighter?  I think many of us can relate. I know I can!

Good thing there are quite a few solutions to this. Your broken highlighter can be fixed with many different at-home remedies including rubbing alcohol, water, setting spray, coconut oil, rose water, vodka, hydrogen peroxide, Vaseline, and even contact solution.

How to Fix Broken Highlighter With Rubbing Alcohol?

First, let's talk about using rubbing alcohol. Many of us have this easily accessible in our homes. There are also some added skin benefits when using this ingredient. The liquid soaks up quick which makes it an easy remedy to use. You will need:

  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Saran wrap
  • Butter knife and spoon
  • Small dish

And here are the steps:

  1. First, you will want to crush up the highlighter in the palette. Trust me, it gets better! Cover the palette with the saran wrap before doing so. Make sure that you crush the highlighter completely so that it appears like a fine powder.
  2. Pour a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol into your small dish. The amount of rubbing alcohol can be adjusted based on the size of your makeup.
  3. Use a spoon to pour the rubbing alcohol over your crushed makeup palette and blend together. Don't worry about using too much. If this happens, it will just take a bit longer to soak up.
  4. Use the back of the spoon to smooth over the makeup, making sure there are no air pockets.
  5. Let the solution dry for 24 hours.

Your highlighter will be good as new after this!

How to Fix Broken Highlighter With Water?

Next, let's talk about using water to fix your broken highlighter. Similar to using rubbing alcohol, you want to crush up your highlighter even more. You can do this by keeping the makeup in the compact or transfer the powder over to a small dish. Here's what you will need:

  • Water
  • Small dish
  • Fork or toothpick
  • Dropper (optional)

Here's what to do:

  1. Add water to your crushed-up highlighter. Start off by just adding a few drops and slowly add more in until it is enough to mix together.
  2. You will want to use a fork or toothpick to slowly mix together the solution. The mixture should be a thick consistency.
  3. Once mixed together, transfer the makeup back into the compact, if a dish was used.
  4. Smooth the makeup over and firmly press down.

Use a cotton swab or tissue to clean around the edges, if needed. Allow the solution to dry for 24 hours and your makeup will be back to normal.

How to Fix Broken Highlighter With Setting Spray?

For those of you who don't want to use rubbing alcohol and have some makeup setting spray handy, this is a great option for fixing your broken highlighter palette. What you will need is:

  • Setting spray (Any brand will work)
  • Tissue paper

What you want to do is spray your highlighter directly with the setting spray. Press firmly with tissue paper and repeat these steps as needed until your makeup is back in tact. This is a nice easy option for fixing that crushed makeup palette.

How to Fix Broken Makeup With Coconut Oil?

I bet you never thought that extra coconut oil lying around could be used as a remedy to fix your broken makeup palettes. Here's what you will need:

  • Coconut oil
  • Fork or toothpick
  • Small dish (to melt coconut oil, if needed)

Here are the steps:

  1. First, melt the coconut oil so that it has a liquid consistency.
  2. Slowly add the coconut oil straight to your broken highlighter compact.
  3. Blend and smooth together using a fork or toothpick. You can use your finger too if you don't have any utensils nearby.
  4. Allow to sit overnight

Just keep in mind that this will give your highlighter a creamier texture. Some prefer this consistency over the traditional hardened powder. I personally like this method because I find the highlighter to apply to the skin more smoothly.

How to Fix Broken Highlighter With Rose Water?

One of my favorite ingredients when it comes to fixing broken makeup is rose water. Why, you might ask? Rose water has many benefits to the skin, including soothing skin irritation, reduces skin redness, heals scars, etc. Using rose water to fix your broken makeup will leave it with a more pigmented texture. It will allow you to use less for more, saving you trips to the makeup store. Here's what you will need:

  • Rose water
  • Small makeup brush (make sure it has an even cut)
  • Fork / utensil to crush makeup (optional)
  • Dropper (optional)
  • Tissue paper

Follow these steps below:

  1. Crush up your broken palette into a fine powder. You can use the back end of the brush to do this. Or if you have a fork or similar utensil nearby then that will work too. Crush up the makeup as much as possible. That way the rose water can be absorbed more easily.
  2. Slowly, add drops of the rosewater into your crushed-up highlighter palette. Start off with just a little bit and add more as needed.
  3. Allow the solution to spread over the fine powder.
  4. Use the end of your makeup brush, or fork, to mix the solution together until it resembles the consistency of a paste.
  5. Use tissue paper to gently place over the makeup palette and absorb any extra liquid.
  6. Remove the tissue paper and allow the highlighter to dry. Leave the compact open.
  7. Once dry, use tissue paper to clean around the edges.

Your highlighter will be good as new! Maybe even better than new with the added benefits of rose water.

How to Fix Crashed Highlighter With Vodka?

I think we've all experienced those clumsy moments, hanging out with friends. Having a couple drinks, getting ready for a night out. And there goes your highlighter. Dropped on the ground and crushed into pieces. Hopefully, you have some vodka sitting around somewhere! It can be put to great use as a remedy to fix your crushed palette. What a surprise, right? Here's what you will need:

  • Vodka
  • Small dish (optional)
  • Shot glass
  • Crushed highlighter compact
  • Spoon or dropper

Follow these steps below:

  1. Just like all the other ingredients, crush up your broken highlighter into a fine powder. You can either leave it in the compact or transfer to a small dish
  2. Take a shot glass and fill it about 1/3 full of vodka.
  3. Use a spoon or dropper to slowly add in the vodka to your crushed makeup palette.
  4. The consistency should be similar to a thicker paste. Mix together until you reach this consistency.
  5. If you transferred your makeup to a dish, then transfer it back into the makeup compact. Smooth over so that the makeup is molded back into its original shape.
  6. The solution will feel like a paste until it is dried. Allow to dry overnight, or for about 24 hours.

No more throwing away those broken makeup palettes! Your highlighter will be good as new now.

How to Fix Your Highlighter With Hydrogen Peroxide?

Now here's an ingredient that many of us have tucked away in our cabinets. Hydrogen peroxide. This is a simple, cheap solution to fixing that broken highlighter palette. Here's what you will need:

  • Your highlighter compact powder
  • Plastic wrap
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Spoon
  • Dropper (optional)

And here's what you want to do:

  1. Open up your makeup compact and cover your cracked highlighter with plastic wrap.
  2. Take a spoon and use the back of it to crush up the highlighter that's in the compact.
  3. Remove the plastic wrap once the powder is finely crushed up.
  4. Slowly use a dropper, or spoon to add in small amounts of hydrogen peroxide until the consistency is a thick paste.
  5. Smooth and press the solution down into the makeup compact until it is in its original form.
  6. Allow to sit overnight or for 24 hours and then your highlighter will be good to go again!

How to Fix Broken Makeup With a Contact Solution?

Now, not all of us have contact solution lying around. But if you do, this is also a great remedy to fixing your broken makeup palette. What you will need:

  • Contact solution
  • Broken makeup palette
  • Fork or spoon
  • Saran wrap (optional)
  • Small dish
  • Dropper (optional)

These are the steps:

  2. Pour some contact solution into a small dish.
  3. Use a dropper, or slowly pour the contact solution onto your crushed makeup palette.
  4. Once there is enough to absorb the powder, you want to mix together until it reaches a thick consistency.
  5. Smooth over and clean around the edges of the compact.
  6. Allow to dry overnight or for 24 hours.

Enjoy your highlighter without all the crushed-up pieces now!

How to Fix Broken Makeup With Vaseline?

Finally, did you know that you could use Vaseline as a solution to fixing that broken highlighter of yours? This is a very easy way to still get some good use out of your broken makeup. For this remedy you will need:

  • Vaseline
  • Small dish
  • Crushed up makeup

And here's what to do:

  1. Crush up your highlighter palette even more with a fork or the back of a spoon.
  2. Transfer to a small dish.
  3. Take a tiny bit of Vaseline to start and mix into your powdered solution.
  4. Keep adding more Vaseline until the consistency is a thick paste.
